Ironbridge Gorge

A circular walk of about 5 miles around the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire.

The Iron Bridge.
This was the first arch bridge in the world to be made of cast iron and was opened on New Year's Day 1781.

High up on the right was the Rotunda which no longer exists. It was a circular structure like a bandstand built in the early 1790s and used as a viewpoint for the Ironbridge Gorge.

Hay Inclined Plane.
This was used to link two canals with a difference in height of 207 feet (63 metres). The boats ascended and descended the inclined plane on wheeled cradles which ran on the rails.
